Central Idea: Religious structures share commonalities that nurture and at times, conflict.
Line of inquiry 1: Structure of the world’s major religions
In unit 5, we are looking at the structure of the world’s major religions for this term starting with Hinduism. It is the oldest active and third-largest religion in the world. It has many gods and a variety of worship practices. However, there are three main gods. They are Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva.
In Hinduism, cosmic functions of creation, maintenance, and destruction are personified by three deities typically Brahma the creator, Vishnu the preserver, and Shiva the destroyer/regenerator; also known as The Trimūrti (“three forms”) is the trinity of supreme divinity.
The children work on the crossword puzzle on the Hindu terms and watch the episode “Who is God?” in The Story of God, in which Morgan Freeman learns about the multiplicity of Hindu gods.
