I have been an art teacher for many years but teaching a bunch of preschoolers had been both exciting and daunting at the same time. In the beginning, I asked myself, “What art forms do the little ones make?”, “How do I teach art history to them?”, “How can I get them to appreciate artworks?”. Then, I realized that I was getting it all wrong. We are dealing with 3 to 6 years old here and what would they would do with knowing about Van Gogh or Kandinsky? Teaching art in the preschool brought forth a new perspective for me as an art teacher. Often, we see art as a product. Yes, it involves processes but the product is always in mind. On the other hand, the act of making is just as important as the final product itself. From a child’s point of view, it is fun and they can be free and creative to make things any way they deem fit and that are entirely theirs. From a learning perspective, they get to exercise and refine their fine motor skills. Win-win! So here we go. Let’s look at what we have done so far!
