Transdisciplinary Theme: How we express ourselves

We are thankful for the support from parents and the school community. We are thankful for the teachers who are relentless in making thinking and learning happen in NTSIS. We express our gratitude to Ms Yvonne and all the teachers for making the Thanksgiving celebrations a wonderful event. Thank you for the memories.

What a busy week…

Nursery:

Central idea:

Feelings and ideas are expressed through play

Lines of inquiry 1: Communication through play

Lines of inquiry 2: Imaginative use of everyday objects

Lines of inquiry 3: Games and toys

Thanksgiving was introduced and celebration was on Friday. We had activities leading the celebration. First, we made a “turkey” craft work, then we talked about what people do on Thanksgiving, and why Thanksgiving is a celebration. The children also introduced and talked about their family members to their friends.

Thanksgiving celebration started with a Corn party, where children had to hunt for corns hidden in the play area. They also competed in rolling corns. Children also tried shacking corns which is peeling the leaves of the corns.

At the assembly, the children had a taste of the pumpkin pie made by K2.

On Friday, we celebrated Thanksgiving at the school field.  The children learned the “Expressions of Gratitude”. They also competed in the ‘Throw the Corns’ game before each child shacked a corn to share with their family at home.

Kindergarten 2:

Central idea:

Poetry expresses our ideas and feelings

Lines of inquiry 1: Poetry in music

Lines of inquiry 2:  Rhymes and word choices

Lines of inquiry 3:  Ideas and feelings in poetry

In the mornings, we continued with phonics, focusing on the rhyming words in or Thanksgiving play. We found a lot of our same rhyming words in the Dr. Suess book, “One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish.” We wrote the letter ‘Ff’ and found all the words that begin with ‘f’ in our Thanksgiving play.

In Math, we continued to practice our place value song, showing the numbers 17 and 18 in different ways. We continued adding sums up to 20 with our fingers.

To expand our understanding of harvest and gratitude, we had a corn party with K1 and Nursery! We read a book about harvest celebrations around the world and why people were so thankful for the food that came from the land. We then made our own poster of things that we feel thankful for and practiced using “because” to explain why. We ended our adventurous week together hosting the Thanksgiving Assembly. We perfomed the history of Thanksgiving with confidence and shared the pumpkin pies that we helped to bake in class.
