NTSIS PYP Preschool Newsletter Week 13

2019-11-18

NTSIS PYP Preschool Newsletter (11th November – 15th November 2019)

Transdisciplinary Theme: How we express ourselves

We are expressing ourselves in so many ways. Let’s see what the children have been doing in the classrooms and beyond.

What a busy week…

Nursery:

Central idea:

Feelings and ideas are expressed through play

Lines of inquiry 1: Communication through play

Lines of inquiry 2: Imaginative use of everyday objects

Lines of inquiry 3: Games and toys

Through identifying toys in the classroom, the children started learning their names in English. They reinforced their learning when matching pictures to the toys. The children were given the opportunity to collaborate and play together in small groups.

Children continued to learn more words that begin with Letter ‘B’ and its sound /b/. They practiced their fine motor skills to make “paper butterflies” using the puncher and pasting on the letter ‘B’.

Through exploring Play, it enhanced the children’s awareness on playing with toys and build up his/her sensory discrimination. It will also help them to learn to identify and name the different types of toys.

What a busy week…

Kindergarten 1:

Central idea:

Stories inform and excite us

Line of inquiry 1:  Stories are connected to our lives and experiences

Line of inquiry 2:  Stories make us feel

Line of inquiry 3:  Ways to tell stories

The children strengthened their understanding of the agreement between the subject pronouns (I, you, she and he) and the verbs-to-be (am, are and is) with games and written exercises.  They also explored and learned the names of different kinds of feelings and emotions with line matching practices and “Flip & Match” flashcard games. Each child also attempted to draw their desired emoji faces on paper and shared them with their friends.

In Math, the children practised counting aloud and countdown 1 to 30.  In addition, they tried simple addition within 10 on the whiteboard and through written exercises.

What a busy week…

Kindergarten 2:

Central idea:

Poetry expresses our ideas and feelings

Lines of inquiry 1: Poetry in music

Lines of inquiry 2: Rhymes and word choices

Lines of inquiry 3: Ideas and feelings in poetry

In the mornings, we continued with phonics, focusing on the sounds of word endings, to see if they rhyme. We challenged ourselves to find all the words that rhyme with play. We finished our adaptation of the “Brown Bear” song by singing our own version, “Children, Children, What do you See?” We focused on writing the letter Cc, and reviewed rhyming with the long ‘ee’ sound. We adapted the History of Thanksgiving cartooon story into a poem and chose our characters for our assembly role play. We tried out our lines and our costumes!

In Math, we continued to practice our place value song. We went outside to explore the place values of numbers in their teams and practiced writing them in chalk.

We ended our adventurous week together reviewing our Thanksgiving play audio files and highlighting the parts we need to remember.

We began to explore the lyrical world of rhyme in Dr. Suess!

We used leaves to determine place value of numbers 1-20 in the warm autumn sunshine…

We made up our own ending of the Brown Bear song with our own mystery animals.

This week, we feature specialist subject: Dance

In PYP preschool Dance lessons, we started to prepare for the winter performance. We learned some Christmas songs and dances. We rehearsed on the stage to enhance their body and space awareness. It’s a challenge for them to remember and demonstrate all dance sequences, positions, steps, and directions with minimal instructions. All of them displayed curiosity and enthusiasm. The stage was filled with energy and movements; every child giving their best.
