Transdisciplinary Theme: How we express ourselves
We are expressing ourselves in so many ways. Let’s see what the children have been learning.
What a busy week…
Nursery:
Central idea:
Feelings and ideas are expressed through play
Lines of inquiry 1: Communication through play
Lines of inquiry 2: Imaginative use of everyday objects
Lines of inquiry 3: Games and toys
The children have learned to sort out all the different kinds of toys into individual baskets. After that, they learned to incorporate new play rules into their playtime. They tried to collaborate with their peers and playing together.
Letter ‘B’ was introduced this week, and children were able to identify most of their favourite objects that begin with sound /b/, such as ball, balloon, bubbles, bear, book, bus, butterfly, bat. They played with balls and bubbles, and did ‘balloon printing” on letter ‘b’.
We will continue to explore the toys in the classroom, express how they feel about each kind of toys and what is their favourite toy in the class.

Stories inform and excite us

The children practised the agreement between the subject pronouns (I, you, she and he) and the verbs-to-be (am, are and is). We also reinforced the concept with flashcards and exercise. This week, we will explore the different kind of feelings and emotions.
Last Tuesday, a fire engine with three firemen together with the Nantong Broadcast Station DJs visited our school. Together, they briefed the children the importance of fire safety at home, general knowledge of fire preventions and exhibited some of the firemen’s gears. The students were fascinated with all the gears and were eager to be picked as a volunteer to try them on.

Lines of inquiry 1: Poetry in music
Lines of inquiry 2: Rhymes and word choices
Lines of inquiry 3: Ideas and feelings in poetry
In the mornings, we continued with phonics and began exploring all the other letters in the alphabet, called consonants. We learned how to read the lyrics to the song “Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What do you See?” Then, we played a Brown Bear song game where we made our own mystery animal out of paper plates. We will take turns asking each other what we see on Monday, in order to review the song. We focused on writing the letter Bb, and explored rhyming with the long ‘ee’ sound.
In Math, we practiced adding with our fingers, sums up to 20 and learned a new place value song. We went outside to play the number line game and threw beautiful autumn leaves onto our ten’s one’s place value chalk charts.
We ended our adventurous week together in the warm, afternoon sun making a pretend fire out of leaves and roasting play dough marshmallows. Here, we tuned in to our new UOI by sharing what English songs we know and what ones we do not.
We read a ballad about a butterfly and a rose, raise your hands when you hear the letter B!
We watched a demonstration about how to use a fire extinguisher.
We sang English songs around a camp fire made of leaves.
This week, we feature specialist subject: Chinese
Nursery:
We talked about facial expressions. The children showed their different expressions when they are in different moods and emotions. They are learning How to Express themselves.
Kindergarten 1:
We talked about the different kinds of disposables. The students had to think about the items and put them in the correct bins. If we are friendly to the environment, it will also be nice to us!
Kindergarten 2:
We explored the topic on “Our Street”. The students designed the special streets in groups. They also presented to their friends.
