NTSIS PYP Primary Newsletter (16th September– 20th September 2019)

Transdisciplinary Theme: Who we are

As a community of learners, we value feedback from parents. We made adjustments so that everyone can be involved in the children’s learning, in come Parents Rock! Parents Rock! reveals what we are going to do in the classroom in the following week. Parents will be kept abreast of the latest happenings and help to support over the weekend. Without further ado, let’s look at the exciting activities over the week.

What a busy week…

Grade 1:

Central idea:

Relationships contribute to our well-being and needs to be nurtured

Line of inquiry 1: Relationships in our lives

Line of inquiry 2: Friendship roles and values

Line of inquiry 3: Thoughts, words and actions affect relationship

This week, we explored our 3rd line of inquiry on how thoughts, words, and actions affect our family and social relationships. We created our crown of friends and family. In language arts, we learned about the short sound of “e” and inquired about basic sentences. For Math, we reinforced our understanding of addition and started looking into the concept of subtraction. We also conducted a survey about relationships and used our math skills to consolidate our findings and used pictographs to present said findings.

Grade 2:

Central idea:

Culture shapes who we are

Line of inquiry 1: Diversity of cultures around the world

Line of inquiry 2: The ways in which families are connected

Line of inquiry 3: Artefacts that symbolise a culture

We finished off Line of Inquiry 2 and explored further, “Ways in which families are connected,” focusing on celebrations and food. In Maths we worked on “Time”, creating our own clocks to help us better understand hours and minutes. The children learnt; O’clock, quarter past, quarter to and half past. We also use the devices to help our Maths and communication in class.

Grade 3/4:

Central idea:

Thinking and learning can help us develop our potential

Line of inquiry 1: Understanding the brain

Line of inquiry 2: Tools and strategies that can help us learn effectively

Line of inquiry 3: We as learners

We inquired into different learning styles and became aware how we learn and what strategies help us to learn the best. Students created posters describing their learning styles and wrote some tips for themselves. They also examined chicken brains in

a science laboratory and then we discussed differences between human and chicken brains. We also reflected on learning in our classroom and whether all students learning styles are addressed. In Math, we explored line graphs and interpreted different graphs as well as overcame some challenges while spotting mistakes in presented graphs.  For our language inquiry, we focused on creating questions and sentences using past simple.

Grade 5/6:

Central idea:

Interactions can lead to and solve conflict.

Line of inquiry 1: Role of communication plays in conflict

Line of inquiry 2: Resolving conflict between team members and through communication

Line of inquiry 3: Conflict can affect team performance

We have done the oral presentation on the online safety rules for kids using powerpoint. We also looked at the interaction of multiplication between a fraction and a whole number, proper and improper fractions and two improper fractions. We studied about homophones which are words that sound the same. We looked at the interconnection between parents and their young what kind of characteristics can be passed on.

We are going to play “human knot” activity to see that we are all connected and practise the various communication and problem-solving skills. We will learn and practise how to multiply a mixed number by a whole number. We will also learn how the various types of plays are acted out to convey ideas and experiences interactively and study the interrelationship between elements in a play script. We will learn to identify the similarities between sexual reproduction in humans and in flowering plants as well.

G1-G2

The Unit Theme: Music and Me

Central idea: Music affects my life.

Line of inquiry1:  Who are the favorite persons in my living?

Line of inquiry2:  How put the MY DETAILs in music?

Tasks: 1. Play a music game to learn rhythm.

  1. Through making MY PROFILE to express myself.
  2. Learning How fill the words in music rhythm.

Children had played music game, and made their own profiles to illustrate their favorite persons, they learned music rhythm, and try to make their own music rhythm and rap.

We are going to …

Practice their Rap and have a class singing show and make video.

G3-G4

Central idea: Music can enrich my knowledge.

Line of inquiry1: What are my favorite data of living.

Line of inquiry2: How put the MY DETAILs in music?

Tasks: 1. Create a music game to learn rhythm.

  1. Through making a post to organize their living experience.
  2. Create a part of Rap with the post words.

Students had created music game, and drew their own post to illustrate their musical experience, they learned music rhythm, and try to create a Rap with their own words.

We are going to …

Practice their Rap and have a class singing show and make video.
