Transdisciplinary Theme: How we express ourselves
Happy new year! Hope everyone had a great Christmas break! Semester one is almost over. The student led conference will take place next Friday where students take lead to present their learning to their parents. We are excited to see them flaunt their presentation skills and shine!
What a busy week…
Nursery:

This week students learned about Chinese New Year, and the story of “Nian the Monster”. Children were introduced to Lion Dance, and they tried playing the lion dance. In addition, they made lion dance puppets and lanterns to celebrate this upcoming festival.
The students also tried drama playing “Three Little Pigs”. Some students were excited playing as the “Big Bad Wolf”, and some students preferred to be “Little Pigs”. Their most favourite part of the play is when the wolf fell down from the chimney and burned his bottom.

After two weeks of winter breaks, the children were back on their toes working diligently. They revised the lyrics of ‘Jack and Jill’, practised the roles with new props (paper puppets) and continued their independent handwriting skill practises while preparing the parts in the act ‘Nian’ at the Lunar New Year assembly on 10 January 2019, Friday.
For Maths, the children learned a new concept “add one more’, revised the concept of ‘more and less’, and attempted more addition sums within 10/20 using fingers practises.
Friday (17 January 2020) will be our last school day before the Lunar New Year break, as well as K1 Student Led Conference (SLC). The children are excited and look forward to sharing with you what they have learned.

Poetry expresses our ideas and feelings

Lines of inquiry 3: Ideas and feelings in poetry
In the mornings, we continued with reading and phonics, playing word family matching games. We wrote the letter Ll and learned how to go through the alphabet to make new rhyming words. We made a big paper name dice by writing a word that rhymes with our name on each side. Coming up with new words and new meanings really stretched our imaginations!
In Math, we reviewed our holiday homework and focused on different ways to make sums of 10 and 20, using the abacus, finger counting and walnuts.
We wrapped up the week participating in the preschool broadway version of “Nian”, the classic Chinese story of the New Year monster. Welcome Back everyone!

This week, we feature specialist subject: Dance
Through continuous learning and practice, all the children did very good job in the Christmas show, clap for them. Nursery’s children not only remembered the movements and formations, but also danced the beauty of Little Snowflake. K1’s children adapted to the sled and stage, and gave the show a perfect opening. K2’s children are very confident and serious, interpreted the cute of Christmas Elves. In order to welcome the Chinese New Year, we are learning a dance about Chinese New Year, after the performance they all excited to learn a now dance.
@Lunar New Year assembly
This was the first of many collaborations to come of the PYP Dragons and Lions. The preschoolers reenacted the story of Nian to explain the mythological origin of the Lunar new year!
