Transdisciplinary Theme: How we express ourselves

The Christmas caroling assembly was a blast. Between rehearsing for the winter performance and learning the lines of the Christmas songs, the students continued to inquire into the unit. It was a busy week but for the fun and laughter we had, it was worth it!

We had been busy practicing their Christmas song for the assembly and rehearsing for the Christmas show. Children reinforced their learning about Christmas through picture cards, making Christmas tree, and snowflake crafts. They also made Christmas cards and cupcakes, to celebrate this festive season.

In Language and Literacy, we learned these; jingle bells, snowman, reindeer, lights, cupcakes, milk, eggs and butter.

In Math,we practiced rote counting 1 to 10.

The children continued to practise casting the roles of ‘Jack and Jill’ with props and music.    They also kept up with their handwriting practice while copying the rhyme words on their own.  For the Christmas Assembly and Winter Performance, the children had been diligently rehearsing their song and dance to put up their best performance for their beloved parents and friends.

In Math, the children reinforced their understanding of the concept of ‘more and less’ as well as attempted more addition sums within 10 using fingers.

This Wednesday, 18 December 2019, will be our last school day for this year and the children are ready to perform at the auditorium.  We look forward to having you join us to celebrate this special festival together and wishing you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Poetry expresses our ideas and feelings

Lines of inquiry 1:Poetry in music

Lines of inquiry 2:  Rhymes and word choices

Lines of inquiry 3:  Ideas and feelings in poetry

In the mornings, we continued with phonics flash cards and a new board game that reviewed the initial sound in CVC words. We wrote the letter ‘Jj’ and learned about holiday words for “happy” (jolly and glee!). We continued to play the Christmas stocking game where we draw a scroll from the day of the week and match the word that is somewhere in the classroom. Through this game we reviewed the attributes balanced and open-minded.

In Math, we explored number bonds and how they create both addition and subtraction equations. We applied this knowledge to making number bond snowmen.

We found all the rhyming pairs in our Christmas carol and in the short movie, “The GingerBread Man” and followed a traditional recipe for making Gingerbread cookies from scratch! Our adventurous week together ended with an amazing Art show created by Khan. We were all inspired by his prolific series of interactive artworks which are inspired by his classmates!

We decorated our Gingerbread boy and girl in our own candy style. Each one is unique!

Khan’s indepenent Art exhibition; showing the inspiring union of creativity and hard work!

This week, we feature specialist subject: Chinese

Nursery

The students observed themselves in the mirror. They were excited to find out that we all have similar features. After the story of <好玩的游戏>,they played a game by balancing a bean bag with  one  hand. Bravo!

K1

We read  the story<猴子与老爷爷>. We learned that we have to make difficult choices:  If we save the monkey, it might destroy the corn field.  However, if we don’t, it might die. We discussed and everyone had a chance to express their opinions. We also played the game <丢手绢>.

K2:

They listened to the Chinese story <三粒纽扣的房子>, and talked about the characters in the story. They were divided into two groups and designed a special house for the characters from the story.
